Cruising on the Ms. Zuiderdam

Greetings from the sunny Caribbean and welcome to my first blog!  I’m cruising on the Ms Zuiderdam with Jimmy Fortune and a great group of his friends and fans.  For those of you who might not recognize Jimmy’s name, he was the little guy on the end with the awesome tenor voice in the famous Statler Brothers quartet!  Since the Statler Brothers retired, Jimmy has been pursing a successful solo singing and songwriting career.

We sailed out of a cool Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, January 12, and headed east towards the Bahamas.  I was happy to hear that most of our group made it through the winter storms and arrived safely onboard.  The ship provided a great buffet lunch on the Lido deck when we boarded and then we spent some time exploring what would be our new home for the next 10 days.  Holland America cruise line prides itself on its wonderful art collection and beautiful fresh flower arrangements throughout the ship!  That evening our group got together in the Piano Bar for our private Sail Away Party!  The room was abuzz with laughter and happy voices as we enjoyed the yummy appetizers and an open bar served by Holland America’s cheerful staff.  (P. S.  I understand that the stuffed jalapeño peppers were incredible!)  I took a few minutes to pass around a microphone so we could find out who all was in our group and where they came from.  I found out we have people from 14 US states and one Canadian province!  Jimmy thanked us all for coming and we thanked him for sharing his time and talent with us!  Then it was off to dinner, where we celebrated David & Esther Ann’s anniversary and Kenny’s birthday.  The delicious cake had the most wonderful whipped cream frosting!  After dinner we went to a musical show put on by the ship’s staff.  Upon arriving at my cabin after the show I found my bed turned down and a good night candy waiting.  Life is hard here on the open sea!

The next morning I awoke to find that we were anchored just off from Holland America Cruise Line’s private island, Half Moon Cay, Bahamas.  This is a tender port, meaning that the ship anchors offshore and the smaller tender boats take us back and forth between the ship and island all day long.  They sure have improved the tender service from the old days!  These tender boats were big and the new docking systems locked them to our ship so that all you did was easily step from one boat to the other on a nice ramp.  It was a bit cool in the morning (mid 60s) so I waited until noon to head to the island.  Upon arriving I headed to the picnic lunch buffet that the ship had prepared for everyone.   Then it was off to explore the island!  Captain Morgan was hanging out in an old pirate ship and they had a band playing with a wonderful steel drummer!  I heard that I had missed the earlier show where 2 of our group members won some prizes in the limbo contest!  Congrats Debbi & Jayne!  They had lots of fun things to do on the island, but I just decided to walk the beach and enjoy the warm afternoon sun.  I made it all the way to the horse stables & back, probably a couple miles.

I got back on the ship just in time for Royal Dutch High Tea where I met some nice couples from Indiana & Chicago.  A spot of green tea, a tiny turkey appetizer, and a scone with whipped cream is the perfect pick-me-up after an afternoon of island exploring!  Then it was back to the cabin for some relaxing before meeting up with the group for dinner, show, & more good night candies on my pillow!  I could get used to this!
