Danube River Cruise 2013 – Vilshofen to Passau

This morning we woke, after a refreshing rest, onboard our luxury river cruise ship.  We AmaCertotopdeckare still  in Vilshofen, Germany, with time to explore the town or enjoy our new floating home before our scheduled departure around noon.  The staff has prepared a tasty buffet breakfast for us.  We learned that every day they bake fresh bread onboard and they quickly won me over with my favorite, fresh croissants!  I elected to relax onboard and check out our new home.  The top deck is a great place for viewing the scenery, relaxing with a good book, hanging out in the TowelAnimalhot tub or playing a game of chess!  While we were out enjoying the ship our maid came in and tidied our cabin, leaving us this cute welcome towel animal on our bed, and a note to be sure and contact the reception desk if we need anything!  I think we are good… Continue reading

Danube River Cruise 2013 – Germany and on to the Danube!

After another delicious breakfast in our hotel we said our goodbyes to Prague, and with all of our wonderful memories of the great times there, boarded our transport and headed south towards Germany.   We noticed as we passed into the rolling hills and farms of Eastern Germany FarmInEasternGermanyhow much it looked like Wisconsin!  My mother had once told me that when her German ancestors arrived in the U. S. they just kept going west until they found something that looked like home, and that was Wisconsin.  I certainly can see the resemblance!  The Czech Republic’s large corporate farms, reminiscent of their days under Soviet rule, gave way to Germany’s tidy small family farms.  It was a relaxing and beautiful drive! Danube River Cruise 2013 – 3 Days Prior in Prague!

The legendary Danube, Queen of Europe’s Rivers, was a long awaited destination for this itinerant traveler.  Immortalized by musicians, artists & poets throughout the centuries, the opportunity to cruise on this storied trade route was sure to be a memory of a lifetime.  I was not to be disappointed.

Our departure day finally arrived and I was anxious with anticipation.  It was a pleasant 2 ½ hour drive most of the way to Washington, D. C., until we were greeted by a gigantic downpour upon our arrival at the airport.  Change of plans…it looked like a good time to park in the garage instead of the remote lot!  After checking in for our flight, we met up with the Williamsburg, VA contingent of our group, consisting of Kathy, who had traveled with us to Ireland last March, her sister, Beth and their friends Beth & George.

Our adventure truly began as we boarded our large Boeing 747 airplane in preparation for our overnight flight from Washington, D. C. to Prague, Czech Republic.  After a delay of about 1 hour from our scheduled 6:10 p.m. departure, due to first an issue over some unknown bags and then a rescheduling of our route due to a large storm in our path, we were off flying  above the clouds for a long (8 hour), but pleasant flight to our first European stop, Frankfurt, Germany.   Here we met up with 2 more of our group, Chuck & Yvonne.  After about a 2 hour layover in Frankfurt, we eagerly boarded our short (1 hour) flight to our final destination of Prague.  Local time when we arrived was 11:00 a.m.  My body didn’t quite know how to react, as it still thought it was 5:00 a.m. and was craving the sleep it didn’t get during the long overnight flight.  Unfortunately, it is one of the hazards of international travel that one endures for the pleasures of experiencing other parts of our amazing world.

We were met at the airport, as expected, by a representative from our cruise line, AmaWaterways, and escorted to the transport to our hotel in the heart of Old Town Prague.  This is where we met up with Ornulf Johannessen, our cruise manager.  Ornulf is an older, outgoing and friendly man who told us that he was there to assist us in Prague and would be traveling with us to the ship in a few days as well.  His comment was that we would be stuck with him for the duration of our trip!  He was full of smiles, jokes, enthusiasm and answers.  We were lucky!  Here he is later on the cruise, modeling some traditional garb for us.  Wish I had taken more pictures of him! Heading North – Two Wonderful Days at Sea

Thursday, January 20, 2011 – The ship time changed overnight again, one hour forward.  This gets us back on Eastern Time.  It seems quiet today.  Most likely people are resting up from our wonderful, action packed days in the ports and feeling a bit sad that this special time might really come to an end.  The sun is sparkling off from the deep blue of the Caribbean Sea. Looking to the horizon you can see the curvature of the earth!  Occasionally you see another ship or freighter passing in the distance.

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica!

Wednesday, January 19 – This morning when I woke up I found that we had docked at Puerto Limón, Costa Rica!  The name Costa Rica is Spanish for “shore of riches” and this country certainly has a wide range of natural riches, from magnificent landscapes to a diverse and unique fauna spectacle.  A quarter of Costa Rica’s territory is made up of natural reserves.  Between Costa Rica’s volcanoes and the miles and miles of white sand beaches is an array of biodiversity.  The natural wonders of Costa Rica have made the land a favorite among adventure seekers, as well as for the general sun-loving tourist.

THE Panama Canal!

Tuesday, January 18, the highlight of the cruise!  We’re going to be at the Panama Canal very early!  Luckily the ship’s clocks were set back one hour, giving us an extra hour of sleep.  At 5:40 a.m. we entered the breakwater for the Canal.  Just before 6 a.m. I heard the Canal commentator start talking on the outside speakers.  There was a big cruise ship in the other lane, just ahead of us.  We followed a tanker ship in and finally entered the Canal about 7:30 a.m.  We learned that the cruise line pays $25,000 each transit just to reserve our time to enter the Canal.  If you don’t reserve a time you could wait 24-48 hours before being allowed into the Canal!  In addition, the cruise line is charged for each berth on the ship, whether filled or not.  All in all it costs about $250,000 to go into and back out of the Canal each time.  This money goes to the government of Panama.

Curaҫao and a Day at Sea!

Sunday morning, January 16, 8:00 a.m. – Our floating palace pulls into Willemstad, Curaҫao (pronounced “cure-sow”)!  Our group affectionately calls this island “Heal a Pig”!   Curaҫao is the “C” in the Dutch ABC islands.  Discovered by Alonso D’Ojeda in 1499, only seven years after Christopher Columbus first landed in the “New World”, this island is one of the oldest European settlements in the Caribbean.  Touched by this land’s welcoming atmosphere, D’Ojeda named the island Curaҫao, Portuguese for “heart”.  After being governed by the Spanish for over a century, the island was conquered by the Dutch discoverer Johan van Walbeeck in 1634.  Today however, Curaҫao functions independently.  Being the largest of the former Dutch islands and the one with the most convenient geographic location, it became the main port of trade for the West- Indische Compagnie (West Indies Trading Company) throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.  The natural harbor with its unique shape and narrow canal-type entrance proved easy to safeguard against invaders and thus provided an excellent location for Shell’s principle oil refinery in the West Indies in the early 1900s.

One Happy Island!

It’s Saturday! I’m starting to lose track of the days, so I need to keep reminding myself. Not really being a morning person, I decided to just get up whenever I woke up. I found out that as long as I make it to the Lido deck by 10 a.m. I can still get the breakfast buffet, which goes until 10:30. Our ship arrived in Oranjestad, Aruba at 1:00 in the afternoon. Since I had been to Aruba before I didn’t book any shore tour and decided to wait until the crowd of people on tours had time to disembark.
